Children

ACCRUFeR® (ferric maltol) is the only FDA-approved branded oral iron treatment for children 10 years of age and older.

Untreated iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in children can cause lasting developmental issues.

Iron deficiency and children

An estimated 2.4 million children in the United States have ID or IDA. Growing bodies need iron — and kids and teens can fall short during growth spurts, when their diet doesn't include enough iron-rich foods, or when menstruation begins.

When left untreated, ID and IDA can lead to developmental issues like:

  • Trouble with focus, learning, and memory.
  • Delays in coordination and motor skills.
  • Challenges with controlling moods and emotions.

When iron is hard to take

For children with ID, finding a treatment they will actually take matters. But it can be difficult. Up to 60% of people will stop taking traditional oral iron supplements because of negative gastrointestinal (GI) side effects.

ACCRUFeR's impact

An effective, tolerable iron treatment is critical to minimize the risk of long-term health impacts of ID for children. ACCRUFeR is the only FDA-approved branded oral iron treatment for children 10 years of age and older. Its patented MALTOL SHIELD™ is the difference maker, delivering the following benefits:

ACCRUFeR method of action

ACCRUFeR's MALTOL SHIELDTM protects iron from the stomach, so it doesn't break down until it's ready to be absorbed in the small intestine. This unique design minimizes the risk of GI side effects.

In a clinical study of children aged 10 or older, ACCRUFeR increased hemoglobin levels by 1.10 g/dL.*
*Average change at Week 12.

In clinical studies of adults, ACCRUFeR increased hemoglobin levels meaningfully as soon as Week 4.

ACCRUFeR patients only take a low, 30 mg dose twice per day.
