Inflammatory Conditions

Chronic inflammation and iron deficiency often worsen one another. ACCRUFeR® (ferric maltol) makes iron absorption and tolerability possible with its patented MALTOL SHIELDTM.

Iron deficiency and inflammation

Iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) frequently occur alongside chronic inflammatory conditions. People with the following conditions are at an increased risk for ID/IDA:

  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Cancer
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • Hypertension and cardiovascular disease
  • Lung disease
  • Obesity and diabetes

Effective iron treatment matters

Traditional iron treatments can leave up to 90% of iron unabsorbed. But don’t give up on finding a treatment that works for you. When left untreated, ID/IDA can increase hospitalizations and risks of complications for people with chronic inflammation.

ACCRUFeR's impact

Inflammatory conditions make it harder for the body to absorb iron. ACCRUFeR’s MALTOL SHIELDTM makes a difference for people with inflammation, demonstrating the following benefits:

MALTOL SHIELD(TM) closed: Protects iron from oxidizing in the stomach MALTOL SHIELD (TM) opened: Releases iron only when ready for absorption in the small intestine Unused ACCRUFeR excreted: Stays protected, helping patients avoid free iron and irritation

ACCRUFeR’s MALTOL SHIELDTM keeps iron protected from the stomach for optimal iron absorption in the small intestine.

In clinical trials, fewer than 5% of patients stopped taking ACCRUFeR because of side effects.

*Total of 175 patients across studies.

Clinical studies showed that 86% of people taking ACCRUFeR were able to maintain healthy hemoglobin levels for up to 64 weeks.

In a clinical trial of people with inflammatory bowel disease, ACCRUFeR did not demonstrate worsening of inflammation.
